Old Ship Gets a New Life in the Ocean

What happens to old ships? Some become museums or hotels. Some are recycled.
And some help ocean animals!

About seventy years ago, a big ship was the fastest ship to cross the ocean!
It was beautiful inside. Rich and famous people loved it. Walt Disney made a
movie on it!
七十多年前，當時一艘巨大的郵輪以破紀錄的速度橫渡大西洋，有錢以及名人很愛它，迪士尼還把它拍成電影!

But after many years, most people used planes. The ship stopped crossing the
ocean. It stayed in one place. People didn't know what to do with it…
但是多年之後，大家只搭飛機不坐船，這艘船失去作用，人們不知道該拿它怎麼辦。

But an old ship can be a reef! Oceans need more reefs. Reefs are homes for
ocean animals. Corals make reefs. But coral reefs grow slowly. They die when
the ocean is too warm.
舊的船可以成為人工礁石，變成海底動物的家。珊瑚長得很慢，還會因為海水暖化而死亡，船可沒有這個問題。

So this ship will be a reef! Workers will carefully clean it. It will be safe
for ocean animals and people! Then workers will put it on the ocean floor.
工作人員會仔細清理這艘船，確保它不會對動物或人造成危險，再放到海床。

Corals will grow on the ship. Fish will swim in the rooms and halls. People
will dive to it and go inside.
珊瑚會在船上生長，各種魚類在船裡游來游去，潛水玩家還可以進去探險!

The ship won't cross the ocean again. But it will have a new life helping
ocean animals!

The fish must be surprised when they see the ship. 魚兒看到船一定很驚訝。

Couple Tries to Set Bubble Tea World Record

An American man likes to set world records (世界紀錄).

At one time, he had the world record for eating at the highest number of
Michelin-starred (米其林星級) restaurants in 24 hours.

He ate at 18 of them in New York City! (他一天之內吃了十八家)

He loves interesting food.

He loves to make a list and do everything on it.

He loves to do fun things!

The man and his Taiwanese wife love bubble milk tea.

It was her idea to set a world record about Taiwan’s famous tea.

The couple (這對夫婦) wanted to go to as many bubble tea shops as they could
in twelve hours.

What was the best place in the world to do this?

Taipei, of course!

Planning how to set this record took two years. (光是計畫就花了兩年時間)

Wow!

They worked with people at Guinness World Records (金氏世界紀錄).

The record had to meet the requirements (要求) of Guinness World Records.

They had to visit at least 25 tea shops.

The couple had to buy a drink and drink at least two hundred fifty
milliliters (毫升，也就是兩百五十cc).

Two hundred fifty milliliters of tea at twenty-five shops...

That’s a lot of tea!

The couple had to walk or use public transportation (大眾運輸).

They had to get a signature (簽名) from a shop worker at each shop.

And they needed to have witnesses (證人) to watch them to make sure they were
meeting the requirements, and to also sign at each shop.

Witnesses don’t get paid, but they do get a free drink!

However, they have to drink it in three minutes so everyone can go to the
next shop!

The woman planned the route (路線) and the list of shops.

The day came...

They started at ten in the morning.

The first drink was finished in less than one minute.

But then...

Lots of tea shops they had planned to visit were not open! Aaaahh!

The woman looked for nearby shops to go to instead.

Then at lunchtime...

The bubble tea shops were crowded (擁擠)!

Oh no!

The woman started calling tea shops to order tea for pickup (外帶).

The man could not call shops because he doesn’t speak much Mandarin (國語).

Eighteen thousand steps later, at 8 o’clock in the evening, they drank at
the last shop on their list.

It was the 65th bubble tea shop!

They had two more hours before their twelve hours were over.

They could go to more shops.

But they had done everything on the list.

And after drinking so much bubble milk tea in ten hours, it was a good time
to stop.

Now they just have to wait for Guinness World Records to verify (查對) the
record.

Tea Seller Brought Chess and Change to a Village

About fifty years ago, a village (村莊) in India had two big problems.

One was alcohol (酒精).

People were making it at home to sell to people from other villages... and to
drink.

People were drinking too much. They didn’t do their jobs well.

On farms, animals and crops (農作物) suffered (遭受).

The other problem was gambling (賭博).

People wanted to win and get money instead of working. But many of them lost
money. They became poor.

Then a man who had left the village long ago came back.

He opened a teahouse (茶館).

He learned that alcohol and gambling were hurting his village.

He invited people to come to his teahouse to play or learn chess. He told
them playing chess was better than drinking or gambling.

More and more people started to play chess.

Chess brought people in the village together, building a community (社群)!

They played chess and talked together.

People who drank alcohol and gambled became more interested in chess.

That sounds strange!

But people say that learning chess also means learning how to make good
choices (選擇).

Maybe chess helped people move away from bad choices in their lives.

People started to hope that their village could change and become better. And
it did!

Now this village is called “the Chess Village of India”!

About one thousand people in the village learned chess from the man.

Some of those people have taught others how to play.

And kids learn chess in elementary school now!

People play chess all over the village: at bus stops, in front of markets, in
playgrounds, on sidewalks, and yes, at the man’s teahouse.

About 4,500 of the village’s 6,000 people are very good at chess.

Some young chess players from this village play in national and international
tournaments (國際錦標賽)!

就連那個用象棋改變村莊的人，也沒能預料到，這場改變會有多麼巨大。

A couple tried to set a bubble tea world record in Taipei.

They wanted to drink bubble tea at the most tea shops they could in 12 hours.

They had a few problems, but they visited 65 tea shops!

And...

A village in India had become poor because of alcohol and gambling.

A man opened a teahouse and invited people to play or learn chess.

People turned away from bad choices and now, many people play chess very well!

A Japanese YouTuber known as Sanyuan set another bubble tea record in Taipei
some years ago.

He held a free concert.

A group of six people made the world’s largest cup of bubble tea for the
concert.

The cup was about 88 centimeters wide and 126 centimeters tall.

It held 680 liters of bubble tea!

The tea took a little more than four hours to make.

It had 170 liters of tapioca pearls (木薯珍珠), 31 liters of liquid (液體)
sugar, and 41 liters of milk powder (奶粉)!

After the concert, two thousand concertgoers drank some of the tasty
world-record-making tea!
